Luxembourg, 25 September (STA) - Slovenia ranks second on the list of European nations who speak two or more foreign languages, according to data released by Eurostat ahead of the European Day of Languages observed on 26 September. The country, where most secondary students learn at least two foreign languages, is preceded only by Norway.

The study which was conducted in 2007 showed that Slovenia has the second highest share of the population aged 25 to 64 who perceived they spoke two or more foreign languages (72%). Norway tops the list with 75%.

Slovenia is followed by Slovakia and Finland (both 68%), Lithuania (66%), Estonia (56%) and Latvia (55%).

A third of adult Europeans speak no foreign language.

Slovenia also ranked high in terms of the proportion of secondary school students studying two or more foreign languages in 2007 (98%). It was preceded only by the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Finland with 100%.

Slovenia shares the second place with Slovakia, while the third place went to Estonia with 97%.
