May, 2009 – Slovenian Honorary Consul in Florida, Dr. Gregory Chan, visited Slovenia with his wife, Mrs. Sandra Chan, and his assistant, Aleksandra Zupan.

Dr. Chan met with Ambassador Basej at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as with Mrs. Tadel from the Ministry of Culture. The main topic of discussions was the potential for promotion of Slovenia in Florida, focused on the areas of tourism, culture, and trade.

Dr. Chan, who is a Provost of the University of St. Thomas in Miami Gardens, FL, also visited with Mrs. Cerjak from the International office at the University of Ljubljana, where the option of future collaboration between the academic institutions was discussed. The official visits further included a visit with Dr. Žekš, Minister for Slovenes Abroad, and Mrs. Širok, general director of the Directorate for Higher Education, a visit of Luka Koper, and a lecture on American Higher Education System in the American Corner in Koper.

Dr. Chan is currently cooperating with the art gallery Sallinas Gallery in Florida to showcase an exhibit of Slovenian contemporary artist, and met with Mr. Dobrila, Slovenian curator, to discuss future plans.

Dr. Chan, who traveled with his wife to many sightseeing destinations on what was their first trip to Slovenia, expressed to many his view of Slovenia: “it is a country that is not only 17 years old, since its existence reaches much farther into history.”
