Lake Bled In Slovenia: Nominated As One Of World's Seven New Wonders Of Nature

Lake Bled is among 261 nominees from 222 countries vying for recognition as one of the seven new natural wonders of the world, and one of the 13 European lakes that have earned the privilege of participating in this competition. Whether Lake Bled made it to finals will be announced in July of this year.

In July, a dedicated expert committee will announce 21 finalists selected from among the 77 attractions with the highest number of votes cast by visitors to http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/ Each visitor can submit only one vote for his or her favourite nominee. The selection of finalists will be followed by another round of voting, this time open until 2010, in which online, telephone and text message votes will be registered. During this time, a committee will visit all 21 finalists, which will get a chance to present themselves in more detail to audiences around the world before the final selection.

The selection procedure is organised by the Swiss non-profit-making organisation New Open World Cooperation (NOWC). The preliminary nomination process, in which Lake Bled has secured its place, started in 2007. Each country was entitled to nominate one natural attraction, while 39 natural attractions were nominated as multinational nominees.

Lake Bled, Slovenia's representative in the campaign, is famous for its island. Many fascinating legends have grown up around the island and its church. The lake, under magnificent Alpine peaks, is fed by only a few streams; the hot springs, which are diverted into three swimming pools, are particularly special. The lake is one of the most visited attractions in Slovenia.
