U.S. Ambassador Leaving Slovenia as His Term Ends

Ljubljana, January 16 - Terms of U.S. ambassadors are ending together with that of the U.S. President. The current President George W. Bush has already confirmed the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia Yousif Boutros Ghafari.

Ghafari is leaving Slovenia on Tuesday and will not be running for the post again.

President-Elect Barack Obama will propose a candidate for the post in the following few months, which will be followed by hearings of the candidate before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate.

It is not yet known who will be the new candidate or when the new ambassador can be expected in Ljubljana.

Ghafari wrote in a special press release, preceding his departure, that it was an honor for him to have the opportunity to serve on this post. He wrote that during his term in office, the United States and Slovenia strove together for growth of bilateral investment and trade, better opportunities for academic and cultural exchange and improvement and deepening of bilateral relations.

The outgoing U.S. ambassador thanked Slovenia for a warm welcome when he took office and pointed out that he made many friends in Slovenia and that he will surely return to "the most beautiful city in the world."

"Thank you for the chance to serve our two countries," he wrote and added that he believes the United States and Slovenia will keep their close bilateral relations.

Ghafari took office as U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia in May 2008, when he succeeded Thomas Robertson.
