Richard B. Wilkens III: Honorary Consul - Houston, Texas

The Embassy of Slovenia offers you a story of Mr. Richard B. Wilkens and his exemplary engagement with Slovenia.

Mr. Richard Wilkens III is Honorary Consul of the Republic of Slovenia in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Wilkens first visited Slovenia in 1989 for the purpose of expanding business relationships in Eastern Europe, as countries in that region were opening their markets to Western companies. As a result of that first visit, one of his companies, Air Routing International, established a representative office in Ljubljana, and, today, still maintains representation in Slovenia.

It was through the development of relationships in Slovenia, in the years prior to independence, that Richard became acquainted with individuals there in both business and government. He and his family visited Slovenia only a few weeks before the fight for independence in the summer of 1991 and witnessed the tense atmosphere that preceded the actual outbreak of hostilities.

Richard was appointed Honorary Consul in 1996 and is a member of the Consular Corps of Houston, which has the third largest number of consuls in the United States, and served on its Executive Committee from 1996 to 2002.

In 1998, Richard coordinated a meeting with Ambassador Dr. Dimitrij Rupel, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and then Governor of Texas, George W. Bush. Richard and his wife, Sandy, have also hosted H.E. Ernest Petric, former State Secretary in the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and H. E. Samuel Zbogar, current Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both are former Ambassadors of Slovenia to the United States.

Richard is a co-founder of Air Routing International, L. P., a company which provides flight dispatch services for corporate, private and government aircraft operations worldwide. Air Routing services over 2000 aircraft, with nearly 50 operations daily with flights to almost every country in the world. To provide these services, Air Routing employs or contracts with hundreds of representatives worldwide.

Air Routing is part of the AR Group which includes several other companies involved in weather forecasting and other flight services.

Richard and his wife, Sandy, have been married almost 39 years and have two children.
