Caves at Postojna in Slovenia: One of the world's most impressive systems
Slovenia has an extensive belt of karst – the limestone stratum that produces the spectacular caves, and the largest in Slovenia is in the town of Postojna.
Visiting the CavesA visit to the cave lasts an hour and a half. The first part of the tour actually begins with a tiny train ride – more like the kind found in an amusement park. In fact, that’s what it felt like as we were whisked through the dark tunnel, with flashes of stalagmites and stalactites and other-worldly formations. It was both fun, and easily accessible. After the 10 minute trip, the real tour starts. We all disembarked and guides took us on a well-paved trail explaining the history of the caves, and their formations. But the main emotion was awe as one huge impressive formation followed another. Caves, halls, passages, huge stalagmites created other-worldly visions. It was impressive both for the sheer size as well as the great beauty. The lighting was superbly done, creating compelling tableaux. The karst underworld was once home to uniquely adapted life – 84 species of specialized subterranean life forms (36 land-dwelling species and 48 aquatic species). For their protection they don’t live in the parts of the cave system open to tourists, but the Proteus Vivarium, located by the entrance is open for visitors with informative exhibits. For those who want more excitement and adventure, there are also special tours for small groups. These must be booked in advance, but the tours take visitors to those parts of the caves not open to the general public. Special equipment is required. Cavers take note – although Postojna is the largest, there are almost 7,500 known and explored Karst caves, and more than 20 caves open or partially opened to tourists. European Route of Roma Culture Launched in SloveniaThe European Route of Roma Culture and Heritage, a two-day Council of Europe-sponsored event designed to fight prejudice about the Roma, was launched in Lendava on Wednesday as part of Slovenia's CoE chairmanship. On Thursday, the event featured the laying of the foundation stone for a Roma cultural centre in Kamenci. Obama's Digital Strategist at Portorož ConferenceBulgarian expats in Slovenia constitute the second largest immigrant group in the country as of 2009, according to the Slovenian national statistics institute, cited by Slovenian and Bulgarian media on October 6 2009. The largest group, exceeding 13 000, is comprised of immigrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Bulgarians, Italians and Germans are in second, third and fourth place respectively, the report says. The foreign influx into the country increased dramatically following the country's European Union accession in 2004. Of the 30 693 people who entered the country since, only 2631 were returning Slovenian expats who resided in foreign lands. American Cruiser Stops For Fun and Sun in KoperThe USS Vicksburg, a Ticonderoga class cruiser, made a welcome respite in Koper after a six-month tour in the Arabian Sea. Humpback whale seen close to Slovenian coast: reportLJUBLJANA (AFP) — An adult humpback whale measuring between 10 and 12 metres (33 and 39 feet) in length has been spotted near Slovenia's Adriatic coast, a Slovenian Internet news site reported Monday. Medical Humanitarian Expedition into the Amazon JungleIn 2007 Dr. Mateja de Leonni Stanonik, MD, PhD, and Dr. Rifat Latifi, MD, FACS, the Directors of the Amazon Virtual Medical Team, accompanied the marathon swimmer Martin Strel with telemedicine during the 66- day humanitarian expedition in which Mr. Strel swam 3,274 miles of the Amazon from Atalaya, Peru, to the Atlantic Ocean at Belem, Brazil. Ancient vine nursed back to lifeIn late September, Tone Zafosnik, at 81 years of age and an otherwise-retired vintner, collected his basket and began harvesting the grapes of his favourite vine. Nothing unusual, one might think, except that the crowd in attendance - about 500 people, including the press, gathered just a stone's throw from the river Drava, in Maribor, Slovenia's second city - indicated that this was no ordinary grape harvest from no ordinary vine. |
