Opening of Slovenian Honorary Consulate in Chicago

Bookmark and Share

On June 14th, Ambassador Kirn will be traveling to Chicago to unveil a plaque designating the Slovenian Cultural Center as the home of an Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Slovenia. At the same time, he will present to the local community Dr. John P. Vidmar as the Honorary Consul for the State of Illinois.

Honorary consuls represent the Republic of Slovenia at political and economic functions, help citizens in distress, promote Slovenia and maintain contacts with the local Slovenian community.

Dr. Vidmar was born in the Slovenian community in Cleveland, where his parents still reside. He came to Chicago to attend graduate school, first at the University of Chicago and then at the University of Illinois. Dr. Vidmar is the Global Head of Public Sector Research for Synovate, one of the largest multi-national market research firms. His wife is from the Slovenian community in Chicago and they both, along with their children, are very active in the local Slovenian community.

The local Slovenian community will use this occasion to bid farewell to Dr. Zvone Žigon, the Consul General in Cleveland, who will be leaving his post after four years and returning to Slovenia at the end of August. The unveiling ceremony will be followed by the annual Member Appreciation dinner for the SCC. The Men’s Choir and the Slovenian Folklore group, Lipa, will perform a few traditional Slovenian dances.
