Radio and Juliet

by Ballet Maribor

Bookmark and Share

The classic Shakespearian tale of feuding families and star-crossed lovers takes on new life under the capable direction of choreographer Edward Clug and the dancers of Ballet Maribor. Set entirely to the music of Radiohead, the three-time Grammy winning English alternative rock band, Radio and Juliet is a contemporary ballet composed of sharp, intense, and intricate movement. Rather than use wellknown Radiohead hits, Clug uses lesser known songs such as "Sit Down Stand Up" and "Bullet Proof I Wish I Was" to connect the story and movement to modern times and audiences.

Clug joined Ballet Maribor, the national ballet of Slovenia, in 1991 and was named Artistic Director in 2003. He has won numerous awards for his horeography including the Preseren Foundation Award, Slovenia's most prestigious award honoring achievements in culture. Clug continues to reinvent movement to capture and investigate the complex relationships between men and women. Radio and Juliet reflects the events of the story in an abstract fashion; the poison is symbolized by a lemon, and dancers don surgical masks for the masquerade ball. Throughout the ballet, there is one Juliet dancing with multiple Romeos, symbolizing the ultimately male world in which she resides.
